VietnameseGrammar0 to A1 Course → Pronouns and Personal Pronouns

In our journey to mastering the Vietnamese language, we’ve come across various elements that shape the way we communicate. Today, we’re delving into a crucial aspect of grammar: pronouns and personal pronouns. Understanding pronouns is essential for effective communication, as they help us avoid repetition and make sentences more fluid. By the end of this lesson, you will have a solid grasp of how pronouns work in Vietnamese, and you’ll be able to use them confidently in conversation.

This lesson will be structured as follows:

What are Pronouns?[edit | edit source]

Pronouns are words that replace nouns in a sentence. In English, we use pronouns like "he," "she," "it," "they," and "we." In Vietnamese, pronouns serve a similar purpose, but they can also convey respect, age, and social status, which is deeply rooted in Vietnamese culture.

Types of Pronouns[edit | edit source]

1. Personal Pronouns: These refer to specific persons or things.

2. Demonstrative Pronouns: These point to specific things.

3. Interrogative Pronouns: These are used to ask questions.

4. Indefinite Pronouns: These refer to non-specific persons or things.

For the purpose of this lesson, we will focus primarily on personal pronouns.

Personal Pronouns in Vietnamese[edit | edit source]

In Vietnamese, personal pronouns are categorized based on the relationship between the speaker and the listener, as well as the number of people involved. Here are the main personal pronouns:

Pronoun Type Singular Plural
First Person (I, we) Tôi / Mình Chúng tôi / Chúng ta
Second Person (you) Bạn Các bạn
Third Person (he, she, they) Anh / Chị / Nó Họ

First Person Pronouns[edit | edit source]

  • Tôi (I) is used in formal situations.
  • Mình (I) is more casual and often used among friends.
  • Chúng tôi (we) is used when the speaker does not include the listener.
  • Chúng ta (we) is used when the speaker includes the listener.

Second Person Pronouns[edit | edit source]

  • Bạn (you) is neutral and appropriate in most contexts.
  • Các bạn (you all) is used when addressing a group.

Third Person Pronouns[edit | edit source]

  • Anh (he) is used for males who are older or of the same age.
  • Chị (she) is used for females who are older or of the same age.
  • (it) is used for children or animals.
  • Họ (they) refers to a group of people.
