Expressing surprise[edit | edit source]

Surprise is a unique emotion that we experience when we come across something unexpected. In Southern Kurdish, there are various ways to express surprise. Here are a few useful phrases and expressions you can use:

Southern Kurdish Pronunciation English
یا خودایا! ya xodaya! Oh my God!
واسه‌ ته‌ خه‌ڵکی! wasa ta xalki! No way!
شایادا! shayada! Maybe!
ندروسته‌! nedarusti! Unbelievable!
خدا من بخشه‌! xoda min bxosha! God forgive me!
گه‌ڵمه‌ن! gelmem! I can't believe it!

Example:

  • Person 1: چی له‌ ده‌ڵێت؟ (chi la dhilet?) - What's in your pocket?
  • Person 2: هۆی گۆڵەیەک! (hoi gola yeke!) - A gold ring!
  • Person 1: شایادا! (shayada!) - Maybe!
