Southern Kurdish Vocabulary - Geography

In this lesson, we will explore some Southern Kurdish vocabulary related to geography. Geography is the study of the Earth's physical features such as oceans, mountains, rivers, countries, and cities. Let's get started!

Basic Geography Terms[edit | edit source]

To understand geography, we need to start with basic concepts like "land" and "water." Here are some Southern Kurdish words to help you get started.

Southern Kurdish Pronunciation English
خاڵ (*xal*) /xɑl/ Land
زمین (*zemin*) /zeːmɛn/ Land
دەرەوە (*darewe*) /dærɛwɛ/ Sea
ئاو (*aw*) /ɑw/ River
بازیری (*bazîry*) /bɑziri/ Gulf

Example dialogue:

  • Person 1: ئاوێکی قەناتەوە لە سووریایی دیاری کردیەوە. (*Awêki qenatêwe le Sûryayîyê diyari kirdiye wê.*) (I chose a river in Syria.)
  • Person 2: چیاکانی ئەو ئاوەیە؟ (*Çiyakanî ew awê ye?*) (What is the name of that river?)
  • Person 1: ئەو ئاوەی کۆبرژۆکە یان لەو دەرەوەیە. (*Ew awêyî Kobrjoqe yan lew darewe ye.*) (That river is called Kobrjoqe or it's in that sea.)

Mountains[edit | edit source]

Mountains are one of the most fascinating features of the Earth, with their towering peaks and stunning views. Southern Kurdistan is home to some of the highest peaks in the Middle East. Here are some words to describe the mountains.

کوێ (*kowe*) /koːwɛ/ Mountain
بەرفەت (*berfet*) /bɛrfɛt/ Snowy peak
سەربەر(*serber*) /særber/ Summit
پاشەخول (*pashek̂ol*) /pɑʃæxøl/ Slope
کۆت (*kot*) /koːt/ Valley

Example dialogue:

  • Person 1: ئەو کوێی بەرفەتە تیکای دیاری کردووە. (*Ew koweî berfetê tîkayî diyari kirdûwe.*) (I chose a snowy peak as my favorite mountain.)
  • Person 2: ئەو کوێیە کە لە ئەڤرۆپا هەردوو شاری قرۆکووە لەسەر پێشەوەیە. (*Ew kowê ye ke le Ewropa hertew shari Qirkokû we lesar peşewe ye.*) (That mountain is located on the border of Austria and Slovenia.)
  • Person 1: ئەو کوێیە گەورەترین کوێی جیهانە. (*Ew koweî gowretirîn kowe yi cîhanê.*) (That mountain is the highest mountain in the world.)

Bodies of Water[edit | edit source]

Water covers over 70% of the Earth's surface and comes in many forms, such as oceans, lakes, and rivers. Southern Kurdistan is home to many beautiful bodies of water.

خانە (*xane*) /xɑne/ Bay
خۆر (*xor*) /xɔr/ Creek
دیل (*dil*) /diːl/ Sea
سەرچین (*serçîn*) /serʧɪn/ Waterfall

Example dialogue:

  • Person 1: ڕێسە کە کوتاییە لە ئەم خۆرە؟ (*Rêse ke kotayîye le ew xorê?*) (What is the name of the village near this creek?)
  • Person 2: ئەو خۆرە کە پێڕاو عەرەبدووە لە خارەپاڵە جوو بوو لەگەڵ خانەیەکی بەزۆر. (*Ew xorê ke Peraw Arabdûwe le Xarepalê Jû bo legêl xaneyekî bezor.*)(That creek is located in the Qandil mountains, next to a huge bay.)

Continents and Countries[edit | edit source]

A continent is a big piece of land that includes several countries. Southern Kurdistan is a region located in Western Asia, and it's part of Iraq. Here are some Southern Kurdish words related to continents and countries.

ئاسیا (*Asya*) /asjɑ/ Asia
ئێروپا (*Ewropa*) /eropɑ/ Europe
ئێمەریکای باکوور (*Emerikay Baquwr*) /æmɛrikɑj bɑkuwr/ North America
ئەستوورۆپا (*Estûropa*) /estoropɑ/ Eastern Europe
شاری (*Şarî*) /ʃɑr/ City

Example dialogue:

  • Person 1: کام شارێکی بەڕێز بەچوار شارییەکی ئەریکای باکوور دیاری کردووە؟ (*Kam sharay kali berêz bechwar shariyekî Amerikay Bagor diyari kirdûwe?*) (Can you name one of the top four largest cities of North America?)
  • Person 2: ئەنجامی کارن ؤۆخەتی تۆ؟ چونکە ئەو شارە روویدا، زۆر سەرەکی هەیە. (*Enjami karên oyxêti to? Cunkê ew share rowida, zôr serekî heye.*) (What's the point of this question? Because that city has really grown and is important.)
