Southern Kurdish Vocabulary - Health

Hi Southern Kurdish learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn health-related vocabulary in Southern Kurdish. Understanding health vocabulary can be crucial when traveling or when communicating with Southern Kurdish speaking people who need medical attention. Southern Kurmanji is the most spoken variant of Kurdish, which is widely spoken in northeastern Iraq, northwestern Iran, eastern Turkey, and parts of Syria. Knowing the names of basic body parts is essential when talking about health concerns. Let's start with some of the most important ones.

Feeling under the weather is common, especially during colder months. Here are some useful words for talking about cold and flu symptoms in Southern Kurdish:

  • Person 1: داوەیەک بۆشیم دەبچێت. (Dawe ya boshîm dibchet - My throat hurts.)
  • Person 2: آیرەنەشین لەلایەن دوکتۆر بکە، شاید پێشنیار بۆ گەرمی دەدرێت. (Aîrenesin lalayn doktor bikê, şayd pêşniyar bo germî dedret - Visit a doctor, maybe they will prescribe something for the throat.)

Living with a chronic illness can be challenging. Here are some Southern Kurdish vocabulary terms related to common chronic illnesses:

بەدەنجی bedenjî arthritis
دڵخۆشی dalêxwoshî depression

  • Person 2: هۆشیاری شووانەمە. (Hoşyarî şûanemê - Dust triggers my asthma.)
