Cultural Insights[edit | edit source]

In Min Nan Chinese culture, it is common to express surprise in a more indirect way. For example, when receiving a gift, an appropriate response might be 我怎么好意思收下啊? (Guá chóa-mō hó i-sû siāu-ē?) which means "How can I accept this gift?" This is a way of expressing gratitude and humility, while still acknowledging the generosity of the gift giver.

Additionally, some expressions of surprise are also influenced by Buddhist teachings. For example, the phrase 无常啊 (M̄-tiông à) literally means "impermanence," and is used to express surprise at the sudden changes that can occur in life.
