Egyptian ArabicVocabulary0 to A1 Course → Days, Months, and Seasons

Welcome to today's lesson on "Egyptian Arabic Vocabulary → Days, Months, and Seasons"! Understanding how to express time is essential when learning any language, and Egyptian Arabic is no exception. Whether you're planning your travel itinerary, scheduling a meetup with friends, or simply wanting to converse about the weather, knowing the days of the week, months of the year, and seasons will help you navigate these conversations with ease.

In this lesson, we will explore:

  • The days of the week
  • The months of the year
  • The seasons

Each section will include vocabulary lists with pronunciations and English translations. We'll also provide exercises to help you practice what you've learned. So, let's dive in!

Days of the Week[edit | edit source]

In Egyptian Arabic, the days of the week are quite straightforward. Each day has its own unique name, and they follow a consistent pattern. Here’s a list of the days:

Egyptian Arabic Pronunciation English
الأحد al-Aḥad Sunday
الإثنين al-Ithnayn Monday
الثلاثاء al-Thulāthā' Tuesday
الأربعاء al-Arbaʿā' Wednesday
الخميس al-Khamīs Thursday
الجمعة al-Jumʿah Friday
السبت al-Sabt Saturday

To help you remember these, note that Sunday is "الأحد" (al-Aḥad), which literally means "the first", while Saturday is "السبت" (al-Sabt), derived from the word "sabbath".

Months of the Year[edit | edit source]

Next, let’s look at the months of the year. Just like the days, each month has its distinct name:

Egyptian Arabic Pronunciation English
يناير Yanāyir January
فبراير Fibrāyir February
مارس Mārs March
أبريل Abrīl April
مايو Māyū May
يونيو Yūniyū June
يوليو Yūliyū July
أغسطس Aghusṭus August
سبتمبر Sibtambir September
أكتوبر Uktūbar October
نوفمبر Nūfambir November
ديسمبر Dīsambir December

Most of these month names are borrowed from Latin and are quite similar to their English counterparts, making them easier to remember!

Seasons[edit | edit source]

Finally, let’s explore the seasons. The seasons in Egyptian Arabic can also be very useful in daily conversation:

Egyptian Arabic Pronunciation English
الشتاء al-Shitā' Winter
الربيع al-Rabīʿ Spring
الصيف al-Ṣayf Summer
الخريف al-Kharīf Autumn

Knowing the seasons can come in handy, especially when discussing weather or planning outings. For instance, “الشتاء” (al-Shitā') is winter, a time when the weather can get quite chilly in many parts of Egypt!
