Let's dive in!

Basic Time Vocabulary[edit | edit source]

In this section, we will learn the essential vocabulary related to telling time in Egyptian Arabic.

The Hours[edit | edit source]

The basic structure for telling time in Egyptian Arabic revolves around the hours. Here’s how the hours from 1 to 12 are expressed:

Egyptian Arabic Pronunciation English
واحدة wāḥida One
اتنين itnīn Two
ثلاثة thalātha Three
أربعة arbaʿa Four
خمسة khamsa Five
ستة sitta Six

To express time, we add the word "الساعة" (el-sāʿa) which means "the hour."

Minutes[edit | edit source]

Next, we need to learn how to express minutes. Here are the terms for the first ten minutes:

Egyptian Arabic Pronunciation English
دقيقة dqiqa Minute
دقيقة واحدة dqiqa wāḥida One minute
دقيقتين dqiqatayn Two minutes
ثلاث دقايق thalāth dqaʿyiq Three minutes

== Telling Time: The Structure

When telling time, the structure usually follows this pattern:

  • "الساعة" (the hour) + [hour] + "و" (and) + [minutes] + "دقيقة" (minutes).

Examples:
