1499 Alonso de Ojeda explores the Suriname River and claims the area for Spain
1651 The first Dutch settlement is established in what is now Suriname
1667 The Treaty of Breda is signed, ending the Second Anglo-Dutch War and ceding Suriname to the Dutch
1683 The Dutch West India Company establishes a slave trade monopoly in Suriname
1799 The British occupy Suriname during the Napoleonic Wars
1814 Suriname is returned to Dutch control following the end of the Napoleonic Wars
1830 Slavery is abolished in Suriname
1863 The Dutch government abolishes slavery in all of its colonies, including Suriname
1922 The League of Nations grants the Netherlands control over Suriname
1942 The United States occupies Suriname to protect bauxite mines during World War II
1945 Suriname is returned to Dutch control following the end of World War II
1948 The first political party in Suriname, the Progressive Surinamese People's Party, is established
