Present Tense[edit | edit source]

In Southern Kurdish, we use the verb "have" to talk about possessing something or someone. In the present tense, we use the verb "hav" for all persons.

Southern Kurdish Pronunciation English
مەن هاو min hav I have
تۆ هاوی to hawai You have
ئەو هاوێنە ew havene He/She/It has
ئەوان هاوێنەن ewan havenen They have

Here is an example dialogue, which will help understand how to use it in the present tense:

  • Person 1: من هاوی گوتار ڤەرگەکەم دە؟ (Min hawi gotar vergakam de?)

(Have I told you about my new car?)

  • Person 2: نە، هەنێکش کاتژمێر دەستەیەک تووش بناسی نییەت. (Ne, heneksh katjmer dasteek tuwosh banasi niyayet.)

(No, not really. I haven't seen you around with anything new lately.)

In this dialogue, Person 1 uses the verb "havî" to say "Have I told you" and Person 2 responds with "I haven't seen you around with anything new lately."

Now, let's move on to the past tense!

Past Tense[edit | edit source]

In Southern Kurdish, the past tense of the verb "have" is formed by using the auxiliary verb "bû" followed by the past participle of "have." The past participle of "have" in Southern Kurdish is "hate."

Here is the table for past tense:

Southern Kurdish Pronunciation English
من هاتە لێفتارێکی خۆش دابنێ min hate lefteareki xosh dabne I had a nice conversation
تۆ هاتی شتێکە دەکەی هەولێرمەن to hati shetek dekay hawlereman You had a beautiful dress yesterday
ئەو هاتە باوەڕی ew hate bawerî He/She/It had faith
ئەوان هاتن دۆلاریێک تێدایەن ewan haten dolarîyek tedayen They had a dollar each

Here is an example dialogue in past tense:

  • Person 1: هاتی بەشێکی مەترسی خۆشمد بە نەچیا؟ (Hati beshyeki metricsi xoshmed be netchya?)

(Did you have a good time at the party?)

  • Person 2: ئەووە دانانەوە ئاسان بوو لە هەڵدەستەکەدان. (Ewew danaanawe asan buw leholdastekedan.)

(It was easygoing, at your current place.)

In the example above, Person 1 uses the past tense "hatî" to ask if they had a good time. Person 2 responds talking about a straightforward situation in their current setting.

Now that we have learned how to use "have" in both the present and past tense, let's take a look at some cultural insights into how Southern Kurdish speakers use this verb.

Cultural Insights[edit | edit source]

For speakers of Southern Kurdish, using the verb "have" is a ubiquitous part of day-to-day conversation. Southern Kurdish speakers use "have" when indicating ownership, instead of using the copula, as English speakers do. For example, instead of saying "I am a teacher," a Southern Kurdish speaker would say "I have the profession of a teacher."

Moreover, similar to other languages, Southern Kurdish speakers use "have" when talking about experiences or states of being. For example, "I have a headache," "You have a cold," or "She has a lot of energy." It is essential to know how to use the verb "have" to participate effectively in everyday conversations.
