Southern Kurdish Grammar - How to Use "Be"

Hi Southern Kurdish learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "be" in Southern Kurdish. "Be" is a very important verb in all languages, and Southern Kurdish is no exception. Knowing how to use "be" correctly is essential in building sentences and expressing yourself accurately. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to use "be" confidently in the present tense, past tense, and future tense.

Present Tense[edit | edit source]

The present tense of "be" in Southern Kurdish has three forms:

Southern Kurdish Pronunciation English
من ((man) I am
تو ((to) You are
او ((u) He/She/It is
مان ((man) We are
شر ((şer) You (pl) are
ئەوان ((êwan) They are

To use "be" in the present tense, you simply put the correct form of the verb before the subject. Here are some examples:

  • Person 1: من ئاسۆیە ((man asoya) - I am happy)
  • Person 2: تۆ کۆتاییە ((to kotayie) - You are smart)

Past Tense[edit | edit source]

The past tense of "be" in Southern Kurdish also has three forms:

بووم ((bûm) I was
بووی ((bûy) You were
بوو ((bû) He/She/It was
بوون ((bûn) We were
بووین ((bûyan) You (pl) were
بوون ((bûn) They were

To use "be" in the past tense, you also put the correct form of the verb before the subject. Here are some examples:

  • Person 1: من دیەمە ((man diema) - I was there)
  • Person 2: تۆ خۆشترینی من بوی ((to xoshtreni man boye) - You were my favorite)

Future Tense[edit | edit source]

The future tense of "be" in Southern Kurdish uses the verb "be" in combination with the future particle "to". The forms are:

بێم ((bêm) I will be
بێی ((bey) You will be
بێ ((be) He/She/It will be
بێین ((beyn) We will be
بێن ((ben) You (pl) will be
بێین ((beyn) They will be

To form the future tense, you put the future particle "to" after the correct form of "be". Here are some examples:

  • Person 1: من بێم تۆ بێی ((man bem to beyi) - I will be, you will be)
  • Person 2: ئەو بێنێت ((êw benet) - They will be)

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

Let's practice using "be" in context. Here is a dialogue between two friends:

  • Person 1: دامەزرێنی تەنها خۆشنیە ئاسۆیە ((Damezreni teneha xoshnye asoya) - I usually dine alone)
  • Person 2: نیتی بێیە هاودارانت کێیە؟ ((Nit beya hawdaranat kêye?) - Where were your companions?)
  • Person 1: ئەو بێوە ئارینا ئوتلێتۆ سەر کۆنسەرت دا ((Ew bewe arina autonomî sêr konserterda) - They were at the Arena Autonomy concert)
  • Person 2: بەچەند زۆر بێوە؟ ((Beçend zor bewe?) - How many were there?
  • Person 1: هەشت نفر ((Heşt nefir) - Eight people)
