Sanaani Arabic Vocabulary - Animals

In this lesson, we will learn some animal names in Sanaani Arabic.

Sanaani Arabic has specific words for pets such as cats and dogs.

Sanaani Arabic Pronunciation English
قِط qit Cat
كَلْب kalb Dog

Let's use these words in a dialogue.

  • Person 1: عِنْدِك قِط؟ (ʿindik qit?) (Do you have a cat?)
  • Person 2: لا، عِنْدي كَلْب. (lā, ʿindī kalb.) (No, I have a dog.)

Domestic Farm Animals[edit | edit source]

In rural areas, domestic farm animals play an important role in people's lives. Here are some common ones in Sanaani Arabic:

دَجَاجَة dajāja Chicken

Let's see these words used in context.

  • Person 1: الجَار عِنْدُهُ بَقَرَات. (al-jār ʿindu baqarat.) (The neighbor has cows.)
  • Person 2: وَدَجَاجَاتٍ وَخِنْزِيْرِ وُدَانَا. (wa-dajājātin wa-khinzīri wudānā.) (He also has chickens, pigs, and ducks.)

In Sanaani Arabic, wild animals have very descriptive names.

Mammals[edit | edit source]

Here are some wild mammals we might encounter in Yemen:

ذِئْب ḏiʾb Wolf
جَمَل jamal Camel
ضَبَّة ḍabba Lizard

Let's see these words used in context:

  • Person 1: شَفْتَ الأَسَد؟ (šafta al-ʾasad?) (Have you seen a lion?)
  • Person 2: لا، بْس شَفْتِ الذِّئْب. (lā, bs šafti ḏ-ḏiʾb.) (No, but I saw a wolf.)

Birds[edit | edit source]

Bird names can be useful when traveling to rural areas. Here are some to look out for:

  • Person 2: لا، دِي بَلَشْنَة. (lā, dī balashna.) (No, that's a finch.)

Insects are not commonly eaten in Yemen but it's important to know their names for safety reasons.

بَعُوْضَة baʿūḏa Mosquito
يَرَقَة الفَرَاش yaraqa al-farash Bedbug
  • Person 1: احْذَر مِنْ الجَرَادَة. (iḥḏar min al-jaraada.) (Beware of the locust.)
  • Person 2: وَلا يَعُوْدِي بَعُوْضَة. (wa-lā yaʿūdī baʿūḏa.) (I don't want to be bitten by a mosquito.)
