In this lesson, we will learn vocabulary related to family. Family is very important in Omani culture and the Arabic language has specific words to describe every family member.

Immediate Family[edit | edit source]

The immediate family is the nucleus of Omani society. In Omani Arabic, there are specific words to describe every member of the immediate family as well as the extended family. The immediate family includes:

والد waalid father
أم umm mother
ابن ibn son
بنت bint daughter
أخ akh brother
أخت ukht sister

Here's an example dialogue to help you understand how to use these words in context:

  • الشخص الأول: والدي يحب الشاي. (My father loves tea)
  • الشخص الثاني: أمي تحب القهوة. (My mother loves coffee)
  • الشخص الأول: لدي ابن واحد وبنتين. (I have one son and two daughters)
  • الشخص الثاني: لدي أخ واحد وأختين. (I have one brother and two sisters)

Extended Family[edit | edit source]

Extended family is also very important to Omanis, and there are specific words in Omani Arabic to describe each family member. Here are some words you might come across:

جد jadd grandfather
جدة jaddah grandmother
عم amm paternal uncle
خال khaal maternal uncle
عمة ammah paternal aunt
خالة khaalah maternal aunt

Here's an example dialogue to illustrate how to use these words in context:

  • الشخص الأول: هذا جدي. (This is my grandfather)
  • الشخص الثاني: جدتي قادمة من القرية غدًا. (My grandmother is coming from the village tomorrow)
  • الشخص الأول: عمي هو زوج أختي. (My uncle is my sister's husband)
  • الشخص الثاني: خالتي هي شقيقة أمي. (My aunt is my mother's sister)

In Omani Arabic, there are specific words for in-laws:

زوج zawj husband
زوجة zawjah wife
حما hamaa father-in-law
حماتي hamatii mother-in-law
الأبناء al-abnaa children (pl.)

Here's an example dialogue:

  • الشخص الأول: هذه زوجتي، ليلى. (This is my wife, Laila)
  • الشخص الثاني: يجدر بي أن ألتقي بحماتي الجديدة. (I should meet my new mother-in-law)
  • الشخص الأول: أبنائي يحبون السباحة. (My children love swimming)
