Omani Arabic Grammar - How to Use "Have"

In this lesson, we will be discussing how to use the word "have" in Omani Arabic. This is an important word to know as it is commonly used in conversations. We will be covering the present tense, past tense, and future tense. Let's get started!

Present Tense[edit | edit source]

In Omani Arabic, the word for "have" is "عنده" (‘andu) which is used in the present tense. Here are some examples:

عندي كتاب ‘andi kitab I have a book
عندك كتاب ‘andik kitab You have a book
عنده كتاب ‘andu kitab He/she has a book

Here's a dialogue to illustrate the use of "عنده" (‘andu) in the present tense:

  • Person 1: عندي موبايل جديد (‘andi mobail jadid) (I have a new phone)
  • Person 2: واو، مبروك! (waaw, mabruuk) (Wow, congrats!)

Past Tense[edit | edit source]

In the past tense, the word for "have" is "كان عنده" (kan ‘andu) which literally translates to "was having". Here are some examples:

كان عندك كتاب kan ‘andik kitab You had a book
كان عنده كتاب kan ‘andu kitab He/she had a book

Here's a dialogue to illustrate the use of "كان عنده" (kan ‘andu) in the past tense:

  • Person 1: كان عندي موبايل قديم كثيرة (kan ‘andi mobail qadiima kathiira) (I had a very old phone)
  • Person 2: واو، كان يستحق التغيير! (waaw, kan ystahiq altaghayyir) (Wow, it deserved to be changed!)

Future Tense[edit | edit source]

In the future tense, the word for "have" is "يكون عنده" (yakuun ‘andu) which means "will have". Here are some examples:

راح يكون عندي كتاب raaH yakuun ‘andi kitab I will have a book
راح يكون عندك كتاب raaH yakuun ‘andik kitab You will have a book
راح يكون عنده كتاب raaH yakuun ‘andu kitab He/she will have a book

Here's a dialogue to illustrate the use of "يكون عنده" (yakuun ‘andu) in the future tense:

  • Person 1: راح يكون عندي سيارة جديدة (raaH yakuun ‘andi siyaara jadiida) (I will have a new car)
  • Person 2: عظيم! (aDHiim) (Great!)
