Let's start with some essential vocabulary that we will use in this lesson.

Grammar[edit | edit source]
In Omani Arabic, giving your opinion can be done by using different structures. The most common structures used are:
- Verb + الصِيغَةُ (al-sighah) + Subject + Adjective + برأيي (bara'yi)
Example: يجب إن نحافظ على البيئة الخضراء الرائعة برأيي. (Yajib 'an nahafizha 'ala al-biy'a'a al-khadra'a al-rayiha barra'i.) Translation: We should preserve the beautiful green environment, in my opinion.
- ب + الفعل (B + al-fa'l 'to be doing something') + الصِيغَةُ (al-sighah) + Adjective + برأيي (bara'yi)
Example: بالنسبة لي، أنا بدأت أحب الخضرة. (Bilnisbah li, ana bedaytu uhibb alkhdara.) Translation: As for me, I have begun to love greenery.
- أعتقد (a’taqid) + أن (an) + الجملة بالمضارع (al-jumlah bil-mudaari')
Example: أعتقد أن السفر يغيّر حياة الإنسان. (A'taqid 'an al-safar yughayyir hayat al-insan.) Translation: I think that traveling changes a person's life.
Let's look at some examples below:
- Person 1: رأيك في المطاعم الجديدة في المدينة؟ (Ra'yyak fi al-mata'im al-jadidah fi al-madinah?) (What is your opinion about the new restaurants in the city?)
Person 2: بصراحة، لم أذهب لأحد هذه المطاعم بعد. (Bisaraha, lam adhab li ahad hadhihi al-mata'im ba'ad.) (Honestly, I haven't been to any of these restaurants yet.)
- Person 1: هل أنت راض عن عملك الجديد؟ (Hal anta raad 'an 'amalik al-jadeed?) (Are you satisfied with your new job?)
Person 2: بالطبع، أعمل مع فريق رائع وأحب العمل الذي أقوم به. (Baltab', 'amal ma'a fariq rayi' wa uhibb al-'amal alladhi aqum bih.) (Of course, I work with a great team, and I love the work I'm doing.)
- Person 1: هل لديك أي نصيحة بشأن السفر؟ (Hal ladayka ayi naseehah bishan al-safar?) (Do you have any advice about traveling?)
Person 2: برأيي، يجب على الرحّال أن يُخطّط جيداً. (Bara'yi, yajib 'ala al-rahhal 'an yukhattat jayidan.) (In my opinion, a traveler must plan well.)
As you noticed in the examples above, Arabic speakers usually use idioms to express their opinions, feelings, and thoughts. Using idiomatic expressions adds more flavor to the conversation and makes it sound more natural.

Let's imagine a dialogue that takes place between two friends, Omar and Aisha, where they discuss their favorite place to visit.
- Omar: مرحبا عائشة! شو أكتر مكان حابة تزوري؟ (Marhaban Aisha! Shu aktar makaan habbah tazoori?) (Hello Aisha! What is your favorite place to visit?)
- Aisha: أنا بشكل عام، أحب السفر وزيارة أماكن جديدة، بس برأيي، رحلات الغوص والحياة البحرية في سلطنة عمان تجربة لا تُنسَى. (Ana bishakl 'aam, uhibb al-safar wa ziyarat amakin jadidah, bas bara'yi, rihlat al-ghaws wa al-hayat al-bahriyah fi sultanat 'umman tajriba la tunsaa.) (In general, I love traveling and visiting new places, but, in my opinion, diving trips and marine life in Oman is an unforgettable experience.)
- Omar: صراحة انا ما جربت المغامرات هذي وشدني فكر الاستكشاف. (Saraha, ana ma jarrabtu al-maghameer hathihi washaddani fikr al-istikshaf.) (Honestly, I haven't tried these adventures before, and the idea of exploration attracts me.)
- Aisha: في حال شفت فرصة، ما تتردد! اكيد بتحبها. (Fi hal shuft farasah, ma tatraddad! Akeed bituhubbha.) (In case you saw an opportunity, do not hesitate! You will surely love it.)
