Kashmiri has a rich vocabulary when it comes to colors. Let's go through the colors one by one with their pronunciations and English translations.
Basic Colors[edit | edit source]
Basic colors are the primary colors and are the building blocks for all other colors.

Note: Basic colors are not just primary colors, it is a broad category concept that also includes any colors that cannot be produced by mixing other colors.
Shades of Colors[edit | edit source]
Shades of colors are created by adding black or white colors to a basic color.

| नारंजु कढ़वु | nārañju kaḍhavu | Burnt orange |
Note: Shades of colors also include tones & hues which are slight variations of the basic color achieved by adding other colors like blue or red.
Usage[edit | edit source]
As mentioned earlier, colors help in expressing feelings and describing things. Here are some examples of the usage of colors:
Example 1
- Person 1: क्याह राथ बवानी मास दुखूण हुण्ड सफेद् थै कव मेग़ावुन? (kyāh rāth bavānī mās dukhūn huṇḍ safēd thai kav meghāvuṇ?) (What color dress should I wear for the new year's party?)
- Person 2: जे अयश्याव वुन प्रमोशुभ ठानि, हुन्ड साफुद् थै ठौथ् लोल. (jē ayashyāv wun pramōśubha ṭhāni, huṇḍ sāphud thai ṭhauth lōl.) (All colors can promote good luck, but white goes best with the new year's theme.)
Example 2
- Person 1: मखौंयाव कालु कौण बारोन नाचुन आचुवान? (makhaunyāv kālu kaun bārōn nāchun āchuvān?) (Which shoes should I wear for the party?)
- Person 2: ही नाचुन तोरू सलुभ बौर्णु थै अच्छि है. (hī nāchun tōrū salubh baurṇu thai acchi hai. ) (These shoes will match well with your dress, wear brown.)
