Negation[edit | edit source]
Negation in Indo-Portuguese is achieved by adding the word "não" before the verb. For instance, "Eu falo Português" (I speak Portuguese) would become "Eu não falo Português" (I don't speak Portuguese).
Here's another example:
| Indo-Portuguese | Pronunciation | English |
|---|---|---|
| Eu estudo | 'ɛw̃ ɛʃ.'tu.du | I study |
| Eu não estudo | 'ɛw̃ nɐ̃w̃ 'ɛʃ.'tu.du | I don't study |
Double Negation[edit | edit source]
In Indo-Portuguese, it is common to use double negation. This means that even after adding "não", another negative word can be added to emphasize negation. This is similar to the English phrase "I don't want nothing".
For example:
| Indo-Portuguese | Pronunciation | English |
|---|---|---|
| Ela não quer nada | 'ɛ.lɐ nɐ̃w̃ kɛːʀ 'na.ðɐ | She doesn't want anything |
| Eu não como nunca | 'ɛw̃ nɐ̃w̃ 'ko.mu 'nũ.kɐ | I never eat |
Irregular Negation[edit | edit source]
There are some irregular verbs in Indo-Portuguese when it comes to negation. The verb "ser" (to be) and "ter" (to have) require the negative word "nem" instead of "não".
Here's an example:
| Indo-Portuguese | Pronunciation | English |
|---|---|---|
| Eu não sou Português | 'ɛw̃ nɐ̃w̃ 'so.w pɔɾ.tu.'ɡeʃ | I'm not Portuguese |
| Eu não tenho fome | 'ɛw̃ nɐ̃w̃ 'tẽ.ɲu 'fo.mi | I'm not hungry |
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
- Person 1: Você fala Português? (Do you speak Portuguese?)
- Person 2: Não, eu não falo Português. (No, I don't speak Portuguese.)
