In Fon culture, expressions of surprise can also be used to show respect to people in authority. For example, when you are in the presence of a traditional chief and he speaks, it is a sign of respect to exclaim "gan!"
Did you know that the Fon people have a famous queen mother called Hangbe? She ruled for over 200 years between the 17th and 19th century in present-day southern Benin.
The celebration of Vodoun (also known as Fon religion) is a very important element of Fon culture, and many rituals and ceremonies involve the use of drums and dance to express emotions such as surprise, joy, and sorrow.
