an old hand

ASAP
"ASAP" è l'acronimo di "as soon as possible". (il prima possibile)
- Esempio: "I'm in a meeting now, but I'll call you back asap."
in the 11th hour
molto tardi, all'ultimo minuto.
- Esempio: "The Director reached an agreement in the 11th hour."
back to square one
Iniziare qualcosa di nuovo.

backroom deal

ballpark number/figure
una stima molto imprecisa.

behind the scenes

easy come, easy go
"Easy Come, Easy Go", è un'espressione usata per comunicare che qualcosa guadagnato facilmente si perde anche facilmente.

fifty-fifty

Qualcosa che ha una bassissima probabilità di accadere.

rock the boat
causare problemi o interrompere una situazione pacifica.

- Example: "This place is guarded around the clock."
run/go around in circles
fare la stessa cosa più e più volte senza ottenere alcun risultato.

safe bet
qualcosa che probabilmente accadrà.

Se le persone sono nella stessa situazione.

smooth/clear sailing
termine utilizzato per descrivere una situazione in cui il successo si ottiene senza difficoltà.
- Esempio: "Once you've passed your exam, it will be smooth sailing to graduation"
snail mail
la posta tradizionale, che passa attraverso l'ufficio postale.
stand one's ground
Non cambiare il proprio parere e posizione.
- Esempio: "He tried to confuse me during the meeting, but Imanaged to stand my ground"
start off on the right foot
iniziare qualcosa in modo positivo.
- Esempio: "We started our meetings on time and started off on the right foot."
start off on the wrong foot

take the bull by the horns
confrontarsi direttamente con una situazione difficile.

il tempo per qualcosa è finito.
- Esempio: "Your time's up, and you have to leave now"
touch base
entrare in contatto con qualcuno.
- Esempio: "I need to touch base with Pat on this matter."
under the table
Qualcosa fatto in segreto (e di solito illegalmente) è fatto letteralmente "sotto il tavolo".
- Esempio: "They probably pay them under the table so they won't have pay tax on it."
up in the air

Letteralmente un "scritta sul muro" si riferisce alle prove e indizi che qualcosa (di solito negativo) sta per accadere.

yes man
qualcuno che si impegna sempre con i suoi superiori.
