Don't miss the chance to check out these pages as you wrap up this lesson: How to Use "Be", Conditional Mood & Pronouns.

Forming Plurals in China Buriat[edit | edit source]

Forming plurals in China Buriat is relatively straightforward. To form the plural of a noun, simply add the suffix "-дар" to the end of the word. This suffix is pronounced "-dar."

For example:

China Buriat Pronunciation English
хон hon book
хондар hon-dar books
хүү hüü child
хүүдар hüü-dar children

As you can see from the examples above, the suffix "-дар" is added to the end of the noun to form the plural. This is true for all nouns in China Buriat.

However, there are some exceptions to this rule. For example, some nouns in China Buriat have irregular plural forms that do not follow the "-дар" pattern. It is important to learn the irregular plural forms of these nouns as well.

For example:

China Buriat Pronunciation English
байгаа baygaa dog
бахарь bakhary cat
дээрэм deerem hand
муур muur foot

As you can see from the example above, the plural forms of these nouns are not formed by adding the suffix "-дар." Instead, they have irregular plural forms that must be memorized.

Examples in Context[edit | edit source]

To help you understand the plural forms better, let's use them in a dialogue:

  • Person 1: Мэнэн хон ховсоноо арилгах гэж байна. (I need to put away the books.)
  • Person 2: Хондарыг хандах юмуу? (Are you going to move the books?)

In this dialogue, you can see the plural form of "хон" (book) being used as "хондар" (books).

Interesting Facts[edit | edit source]

In China Buriat culture, many words have both singular and plural forms that are used depending on the circumstances. For example, the word for "guest" is "зочин" in the singular and "зочиндуу" in the plural. This is because in China Buriat culture, it is customary to welcome guests in groups rather than individually.
