Basic Use[edit | edit source]

The verb "have" in China Buriat is expressed by the verb "байгаа" (baigaa). It is used to express possession or existence of something or someone. In the present tense, "байгаа" (baigaa) is often followed by a personal pronoun to indicate who possesses something, as in the following examples:

China Buriat Pronunciation English
маань байгаа maan baigaa I have
та байгаа ta baigaa you have
тэр байгаа ter baigaa he/she has
бид байгаа bid baigaa we have
таньд байгаа tand baigaa you all have
тэдэнд байгаа tedend baigaa they have

Note that the personal pronoun can be omitted if it is clear from context. Also, the verb "байгаа" (baigaa) can be negated with the negative particle "биш" (bish), which is added at the end of the sentence. For example:

  • Маань байгаа. (Maan baigaa.) - I have.
  • Маань байгаа биш. (Maan baigaa bish.) - I don't have.

Compound Tenses[edit | edit source]

China Buriat has compound tenses that involve the auxiliary verb "байх" (baikh), which also means "to have". This verb is conjugated according to the person and tense, and is followed by the past participle of the main verb. The formation of the compound tenses is shown in the table below:

Tense Auxiliary verb Past participle (suffix -сан) Example
Present Perfect байгаа + байх Verb + -сан Аят ярьсан. Би байгаа ярьсан.
Past Perfect байгаа + байх (in past tense) Verb + -сан Аят ярьсан. Тэр байгаа ярьсан.

The present perfect tense is used to describe an action that started in the past and continues up to the present. The past perfect tense is used to describe an action that was completed before another past action. Let's see some examples:

  • Аят ярьсан. (Ayat yarsan.) - Ayat has worked.
  • Би байгаа ярьсан. (Bi baigaa yarsan.) - I have worked.
  • Аят ярьсан. Тэр байгаа ярьсан. (Ayat yarsan. Ter baigaa yarsan.) - Ayat had worked. He/she had worked.
