"Be" in Chadian Arabic[edit | edit source]

In Chadian Arabic, "be" is translated as "كون" (kun). This verb is very important because it is used to indicate identity, existence, location and to form the present tense.

Identity[edit | edit source]

When we want to say that someone or something is something else in Chadian Arabic, we use the verb "be". Here is an example:

Chadian Arabic Pronunciation English
أنا كاتب Ana kaatib I am a writer

Here, "Ana" means "I", "kaatib" means "writer" and "kun" has been omitted because it is implied in the verb "kaatib".

Existence[edit | edit source]

To indicate existence, we use the verb "be" accompanied by the preposition "في" (fi) which means "in" in English. For example:

Chadian Arabic Pronunciation English
في تام Fi taam There is food

Here, "fi" means "in" and "taam" means "food".

Location[edit | edit source]

When we want to say where something is, we also use the verb "be" accompanied by the preposition "في" (fi). For example:

Chadian Arabic Pronunciation English
أنا في المدرسة Ana fi l-madrasa I am at school

In this case, "ana" means "I", "fi" means "at" and "al-madrasa" means "school".

Present tense[edit | edit source]

To form the present tense in Chadian Arabic, we use the present tense of the verb "be" followed by the noun or adjective. For example:

Chadian Arabic Pronunciation English
أنا متعب Ana mata'ab I am tired
هو سعيد Huwa sa'eed He is happy

Here, "ana" means "I", "mata'ab" means "tired", "huwa" means "he" and "sa'eed" means "happy".

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

Let's practice using "be" in a dialogue:

  • Person 1: شكون موجود فالغرفة؟ (Shkun moujoud f l-ghurfah?) (Who's in the room?)
  • Person 2: أنا موجود. (Ana moujoud.) (I am here.)
  • Person 1: هل أنت في المكتب؟ (Hal anta f al-maktab?) (Are you in the office?)
  • Person 2: لا، أنا في الحديقة. (La, ana fi l-hadikah.) (No, I am in the garden.)
