In this lesson, we will explore the foundational rules of Armenian pronunciation, including vowel and consonant sounds and some common pronunciation pitfalls to avoid. This article focuses on Eastern Armenian pronunciation.
The Armenian Vowel System[edit | edit source]
There are six vowel sounds in Armenian:
Ա (a), Ե (e), Ի (i), Ո (o), ՈՒ (u), Ը (ë)
| Armenian | Pronunciation | English |
|---|---|---|
| Ա | [ɑ] (a) | father |
| Ե | [e] (e) | similar to yes |
| Ի | [i] (i) | machine |
| Ո | [o] (o) | more |
| ՈՒ | [u] (u) | food |
| Ը | [ə] (ë) | above |
The vowels ե and ո are pronounced [je] and [vo] at the beginning of words (e.g. ես, [jes]). The only exceptions to this is the Present Auxiliary (եմ, ես, etc. are pronounced [em],[es]...), and the word ով (still pronounced [ov]). Because of this, there are two additional vowels:
Է (é), and Օ (o)
These are used exclusively at the beginning of words to indicate the sound should still be an [e] or an [o].
The Armenian Consonant System[edit | edit source]
Armenian consonants can be quite diverse and may include sounds that are unfamiliar to English speakers. There are 34 consonant sounds in Armenian.
Consonant Sounds[edit | edit source]
Here are some key consonants, along with their pronunciations:
| Armenian | Pronunciation | English |
|---|---|---|
| Բ | [b] | bat |
| Գ | [g] | go |
| Դ | [d] | dog |
| Զ | [z] | zoo |
| Լ | [l] | love |
| Ն | [n] | no |
| Ս | [s] | sun |
| Թ | [tʰ] | top (aspirated) |
| Կ | [k] | kite |
| Ր | [ɾ] | Spanish "pero" |
- Թ (tʰ) represents a strong aspirated "t" sound, like the "t" in "top," but with a puff of air.
- Ր (ɾ) is pronounced like a rolled "r," similar to the Spanish "r" in "perro."
Stress[edit | edit source]
Stress in Armenian generally falls on the last syllable, although it is less pronounced than English.
