Welcome to our lesson on Adverbs of Time, Manner, and Place! In the beautiful Armenian language, adverbs play a crucial role in enriching our communication. They transform simple sentences into vivid expressions, allowing us to convey when, how, and where actions take place. Whether you’re describing a bustling market in Yerevan or recalling a memorable family dinner, adverbs help us paint a clearer picture.

In this lesson, we will explore how adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. We will focus on three main categories of adverbs: time, manner, and place. Additionally, we will learn how to form adverbs from adjectives, which will empower you to express yourself more fluently in Armenian.

Outline of the Lesson:

  • Introduction to Adverbs
  • Adverbs of Time
  • Adverbs of Manner
  • Adverbs of Place
  • Forming Adverbs from Adjectives
  • Practice Exercises

Introduction to Adverbs[edit | edit source]

Adverbs are words that provide more detail about how, when, or where something happens. In Armenian, just like in English, adverbs can modify:

  • Verbs: e.g., She runs quickly.
  • Adjectives: e.g., He is very tall.
  • Other adverbs: e.g., She runs quite quickly.

Understanding adverbs will allow you to express nuances in your speech and writing, making your communication richer and more engaging.

Adverbs of Time[edit | edit source]

Adverbs of time tell us when an action occurs. In Armenian, these adverbs are used to provide context to actions and help situate them in time. Here are some common adverbs of time in Armenian:

Armenian Pronunciation English
հիմա hima now
երեկ yereq yesterday
այսօր aysor today
վաղը vagh@ tomorrow
հաճախ hachakh often
երբեմն yerbemn sometimes
միշտ misht always
արագ arag soon
վերջապես verjapes finally
անմիջապես anmijapes immediately

To use these adverbs, simply place them in your sentence to modify the verb. For example:

  • Ես հիմա գնում եմ (Yes hima gnum em) – I am going now.
  • Նա երեկ եկավ (Na yereq yekav) – He came yesterday.

Adverbs of Manner[edit | edit source]

Adverbs of manner describe how an action is performed. They add depth to our sentences by explaining the manner in which something occurs. Here are some examples:

Armenian Pronunciation English
արագ arag fast
ուշ ush late
հանգիստ hangist calmly
լավ lav well
վատ vat badly
դժվար dvuzhar hard
հեշտ hesht easy
գեղեցիկ geghetsik beautifully
ճիշտ chisht correctly
վատ vat poorly

Just like before, these adverbs can be placed in a sentence. For instance:

  • Նա արագ է վազում (Na arag é vazum) – He runs fast.
  • Դու լավ ես երգում (Du lav es yergum) – You sing well.

Adverbs of Place[edit | edit source]

Adverbs of place tell us where an action occurs. They help us understand the context of actions in relation to location. Here are some common adverbs of place in Armenian:

Armenian Pronunciation English
այստեղ aystegh here
այնտեղ aintegh there
շուրջ shurj around
ներս ners inside
դուրս dur@ss outside
մոտ mot near
հեռու herru far
վեր ver up
ներ ner down
առջև arj@v in front

These adverbs can also be easily incorporated into your sentences:

  • Ես այստեղ եմ (Yes aystegh em) – I am here.
  • Նրանք այնտեղ են (Nrank’ ayntegh en) – They are there.

Forming Adverbs from Adjectives[edit | edit source]

In Armenian, many adjectives are simply used as the adverbs. For example, Լավ ե՞ս անում։ "Are you doing well?"

many adverbs are formed from adjectives by adding certain suffixes. This allows you to expand your vocabulary and express ideas more fluidly. The most common way to form adverbs from adjectives is by using the suffixes -ությամբ (-ut’yamb) or -աբար (-abar).

Here are some more examples:

Armenian Pronunciation English
գեղեցիկ geghetsik beautiful
գեղեցկությամբ geghetskut’yamb beautifully
հեշտ hesht easy
հեշտությամբ heshtut’yamb easily
դժվար dvuzhar hard
դժվարությամբ dvuzharut’yamb hardly

Keep in mind that not all adjectives can be transformed into adverbs, but many can, allowing you to enhance your descriptions.
