Agarabi Grammar - Adjectives

Hi Agarabi learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will focus on Adjectives in Agarabi grammar. Adjectives are used to describe or modify a noun or pronoun. Unlike some other languages, Agarabi adjectives always come after the noun they describe, not before. Let's dive into some interesting facts about adjectives in Agarabi! 🤓

Finish this lesson and explore these related pages: Pronouns, Conditional Mood & Negation.

Definition of Adjectives[edit | edit source]

In Agarabi, adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns or pronouns. For example, the word 'lom'e' means 'red'. Therefore, if we say 'kuri lom'e, it means 'red car'. The adjective 'lom'e' modifies the noun 'kuri'.

Adjectives in Agarabi do not change their form to match the gender or number of the noun they describe. For example, the adjective 'lom'e' (red) does not change whether it describes a masculine or a feminine noun. Likewise, it is the same whether it describes a singular or plural noun.

However, adjectives are used in different forms depending on their position in the sentence.

Position of Adjectives[edit | edit source]

In Agarabi, adjectives come after the noun they describe. For example:

  • lale muri - tall tree
  • simbu dogi - small dog
  • witi foló - white flower

In cases where there are two or more adjectives describing the same noun, the order of the adjectives is important. The following table shows the sequence of adjectives in Agarabi:

Order Example Translation
1 Noun Dogi
2 Color Witi dogi white dog
3 Size Simbu witi dogi small white dog
4 Shape Lotu simbu witi dogi round small white dog
5 Age Lale lotu simbu witi dogi old round small white dog

Comparison of Adjectives[edit | edit source]

In Agarabi, comparative and superlative forms of adjectives are formed using different word orders. For example:

  • faru - big
  • faruka - bigger
  • gufara - biggest

The comparative form is usually formed by adding the suffix -ka, while the superlative form is formed by adding the prefix gu-.

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

Here is an Agarabi conversation using adjectives:

  • Person 1: Lafo lom'e'eré kuri fo loñgoma. (I saw a red car in the morning.)
  • Person 2: Lom'e'eré kuri lale yaji. (The red car is a tall one.)
