There are no words for ‘a’ or ‘the’ in Volapük; however, in order to indicate unassimilated or foreign words in the language, the word el is used for ‘the’:

• tood ‘a car, the car’
• bür ‘the office/an office’
• el Sputnik ‘the Sputnik’
