Expressing opinions[edit | edit source]

When we give our opinion, we talk about what we feel or think about a specific topic. We use different language tools to express certainty or doubt about our ideas. Here are some common expressions in Swiss German:

Ich bin mir sicher, dass... "ɪχ bɪn mɪr ˈsɪχɛr, das... " I am certain that...
Meiner Meinung nach... "maɪnɐ ˈmaɪnʊŋ naχ... " In my opinion...
Ich denke, dass... "ɪχ ˈdɛŋkɛ, das..." I think that...
Ich bin nicht sicher, ob... "ɪχ bɪn nɪχt ˈsɪχɛr, ɔp..." I am not sure whether...
Ich glaube, dass... "ɪχ ˈglɔʏːbɛ, das..." I believe that...

Giving responses[edit | edit source]

In communication, it is essential to give responses to express agreement or disagreement. We use different language tools to do that. Here are some common expressions in Swiss German:

Da hast du recht. "da hast du recht. " You are right.
Stimmt! "ʃtimt! " Exactly! (that’s true)
Das sehe ich anders. "das ˈzɛhə ɪç ˈandərs. " I see things differently.
Da bin ich nicht einverstanden. "da bin ɪχ nɪχt ˈaɪnˌfɛrʃtandən. " I disagree.
Keine Ahnung. "kaɪnə ˈaʊnʊŋ. " I have no idea.

Let's see some examples in a conversation:

  • Person 1: Was denkst du über das Schweizer Schulsystem? (What do you think about the Swiss educational system?)
  • Person 2: Meiner Meinung nach gibt es in der Schweiz viele Möglichkeiten, eine gute Ausbildung zu bekommen. (In my opinion, there are many opportunities to get a good education in Switzerland.)
  • Person 1: Denkst du, dass Schülerinnen und Schüler Schuluniformen tragen sollten? (Do you think students should wear school uniforms?)
  • Person 2: Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob es eine gute Idee ist, Schülerinnen und Schüler zu zwingen, Schuluniformen zu tragen. (I am not sure whether it is a good idea to force students to wear school uniforms.)
  • Person 1: Warst du schon mal in den USA? (Have you ever been to the USA?)
  • Person 2: Nein, ich war noch nie in den USA. Ich habe aber gehört, dass es dort sehr schön ist. (No, I have never been to the USA. But I have heard that it is very nice there.)
