Southern Uzbek Vocabulary - Geography

Hi Southern Uzbek learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn Southern Uzbek vocabulary related to geography. As a Southern Uzbek language teacher, I know that one of the best ways to learn and memorize vocabulary is to connect it to cultural information and interesting facts. We will do that here, and I will also use simple and informal language, with analogies to illustrate complex concepts. So, let's get started!

Southern Uzbek speakers live primarily in Uzbekistan, but there are also significant populations in Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. Here are the names of these four countries in Southern Uzbek:

Oʻzbekiston /oʔbizkæston/ Uzbekistan
Oroxiston /oroxiston/ Afghanistan
Tojikiston /toʤikiston/ Tajikistan
Türkmeniston /tyrkmeniston/ Turkmenistan

Here is an example dialogue:

  • Person 1: Oʻz yurtimiz Oʻzbekiston! (/oʔz jurtimiz oʔbizkæston!/ My country is Uzbekistan!)

There are seven continents in the world, and here are their names in Southern Uzbek:

Southern Uzbek speakers live in many different cities around the world. Here are some famous cities and their names in Southern Uzbek:

Xitoy /xitøj/ China

  • Person 1: Sizning sevimli shahringiz qayerda? (/sizning sevimli ʃæhringiz qæjerda/ What is your favorite city?)
  • Person 2: Mening sevimli shahrim Moskva. (/mening sevimli ʃæhrim moskva/ My favorite city is Moscow.)

Landforms[edit | edit source]

The world is full of many different landforms. Here are some examples and their names in Southern Uzbek:

jar /ʤær/ canyon
muz /muz/ peninsula

Here is an example dialogue:

  • Person 1: Qaysi tabiiy davlatlarda sayyohat qilmoqchisiz? (/qæjsi tæbijj dævlatlærdæ săjjohæt qilmoqʧisiz/ In which countries do you want to travel to for natural sightseeing?)
  • Person 2: Men koʻllarga yashiringan davlatlarga borishni xohlayman. (/men koʔl:lærgæ jæʃiringæn dævlatlærgæ borishni xoʻlæjmæn/ I want to travel to countries with lakes full of water.)
