Landforms[edit | edit source]

Sanskrit has many words for different landforms. Here are a few of them:

Sanskrit Pronunciation English
पर्वतः parvatः Mountain
महानदी mahānadī River
समुद्रः samudraः Ocean
झीलः jhīlaः Lake
घाटः ghāṭaḥ Hill

Person 1: पर्वतः किंवदत्ते? (parvatः kiṃvadatte?) (What is a mountain?) Person 2: पर्वतः विशालो अद्रिवालः धातुभूतो नदीसह तनूभूतश्च शृङ्गवती एव अस्ति। (parvatः viśālo adrivālaḥ dhātubhūto nadīsaha tanūbhūtaśca śṛṅgavatī eva asti.) (A mountain is a very large, solid, naturally occurring elevated landmass with a summit, usually at a considerable height from the surrounding terrain, that is generally steeper than a hill.)

Climate[edit | edit source]

India's climate varies greatly throughout the country due to its vast geographical expanse. Here are some words to describe the different types of climate you can find in India:

Sanskrit Pronunciation English
उष्णम् uṣṇam Hot
शीतम् śītam Cold
वर्षा varṣā Rainy
मृत्‌चाया mṛt‌cāyā Dry
गर्जरः garjaraḥ Desert

Person 1: को गर्जरः अस्ति (ko garjaraḥ asti?) (Where is the desert?) Person 2: भारतस्य पश्चिमध्रुवे गर्जर उपस्थितः अस्ति। (bhāratasya paścimadhruve garjara upasthitaḥ asti.) (The desert is located in the western part of India.)

Directions[edit | edit source]

Here are some words in Sanskrit to describe different directions:

Sanskrit Pronunciation English
उत्तरः uttaraḥ North
दक्षिणः dakṣiṇaḥ South
पूर्वः pūrvaḥ East
पश्चिमः paścimaḥ West

Person 1: भारतस्य प्रधान उत्तरः कुत्र अस्ति? (bhāratasya pradhāna uttaraḥ kutra asti?) (Where is the main Northern part of India?) Person 2: भारतस्य प्रधान उत्तरः हिमालयपर्वतामृतपातसमुच्छयोऽयमस्ति। (bhāratasya pradhāna uttaraḥ himālayaparvatāmṛtapātasamucchayo'yamas्तi.) (The main Northern part of India lies in the Himalayan mountain ranges.)

Interesting facts[edit | edit source]

- The word 'Sanskrit' means 'refined' or 'purified' in Sanskrit itself. - Bhugol, meaning geography, is a Sanskrit word that is derived from two words; Bhoo meaning Earth and Gol meaning round or spherical. - India's ancient system of mathematics and geometry is known as Vedic Mathematics, which is based on the Vedas, the oldest Sanskrit texts.
