Using "Have" in Sanaani Arabic[edit | edit source]

In Sanaani Arabic, "to have" is translated as "عند" (ʿind) or "ل" (li). Both are used as an auxiliary verb (similar to "have" or "has" in English) or a main verb (similar to "own" or "possess" in English).

Here are some examples:

Sanaani Arabic Pronunciation English
عندي ساعة ʿindi saʿa I have a watch.
لها كتاب laha kitab She has a book.
عندهم سيارة ʿinduhum sayyara They have a car.

As you can see, "عند" (ʿind) is used when we talk about having something. "ل" (li) is used when the subject of the sentence "has" a certain characteristic, such as age or nationality.

Here is a dialogue to help you see the use of "have" in context:

  • Person 2: عندي شغل الأسبوع الجاي. (ʿindi shughul al-asbuʿ al-jāy) (I have work next week.)

Plural Form[edit | edit source]

To form the plural form of "to have" in Sanaani Arabic, you simply add "ون" (wun) at the end of "عند" (ʿind). The plural form is used when referring to more than one person or thing.
