Saidi Arabic Grammar - Give your Opinion

Basic Vocabulary

Let's first review some words that will be useful in this lesson.

أعتقد	aetqad	I think
أظن	azun	I believe
يعتقد	yaetqad	he/she thinks
يظن	yazun	he/she believes
جيد	jayid	Good
سيء	sayyaa'	Bad

Giving Your Opinion

When giving your opinion, you can start with "أعتقد" (aetqad) for "I think" or "أظن" (azun) for "I believe". Here are some examples:

Example in Saidi Arabic	Transliteration	English Translation
أعتقد أنّ هذا الفيلم جيد	Aetqad anna haðaa alfiilim jayid	I think this movie is good
أظن أنْ هذا الفنان موهوب	Azun anna haða alfanān muhwib	I believe this artist is talented

You can also use the verbs "يعتقد" (yaetqad) for "he/she thinks" and "يظن" (yazun) for "he/she believes". For example:

تعتقدُ والدتي أن الطعامُ الياباني جيد	Taetqadu walidatii 'annat-ta'āmu lyaabaani jayid	My mother thinks that Japanese food is good
يظنُ المديرُ أننا بحاجةٍ إلى مزيدٍ من الوقت	Yazunu al-mudiiru 'annanā bi-ħājiçin 'ilaa mazydin min al-waqt	The manager believes that we need more time

To ask for someone's opinion, you can use the phrase "ما رأيك؟" (maa ra'ayk?) which means "What do you think?" or "What's your opinion?"

Common Expressions

There are several expressions you can use to give your opinion:

• إنَّ برنامجَ غذاء الصباحِ جيدٌ (ʾinna barnāmaj ġidhāʾ aṣ-ṣabāḥ jayyid) - The morning food program is good.
• أما بالنسبةِ للفيلمِ، فإنَّه رائعٌ (ʾamā bil-nisbiṭi li-l-fiilm, fa-ʾinahu rāʾiʿ) - As for the movie, it's amazing.
• لا أعتقدُ أنَّهُ مناسبٌ لهذا المناسبةِ (la 'aetqadu 'annahū munāsibun li-hādha al-munāspati) - I don't think it's suitable for this occasion.

And here are some expressions to disagree politely:

• على كلٍّ، أعتقدُ أنَّ (ʿalaa killin, 'aetqadu 'anna) - Anyway, I think that...
• لا أعتقدُ ذلكَ، ولكن إن كنتَ تشعرُ بالراحةِ معه، فحسنًا (la 'aetqadu dhalika, walakin 'in kunt tashʿuru biraahati ma'ahu, fa-ħusnan) - I don't think so, but if you feel comfortable with it, then okay.

Let's practice with a dialogue:

• Person 1: ما رأيك في هذا الفيلم؟ (maa ra'ayk fii haðaa alfiilim? - What do you think of this movie?)
• Person 2: أعتقدُ أنهُ جيدٌ، ولكن النهايةُ غيرُ مرضيةٍ بالنسبةِ لي. (ʾaetqadu 'annahu jayyidun, walakin an-nihā'ah ġayru marḍiyyatin bil-nisbiṭi li) - I think it's good, but the ending is unsatisfying for me.

Cultural Insight

In Saidi Arabic culture, expressing your opinion can be seen as a sign of confidence and self-assurance. However, it's important to do so respectfully and politely, especially in formal situations.
