abbreviation vs acronym[edit | edit source]

An abbreviation is any shortened form of a word or phrase (e.g., "Dr." for Doctor, "appt." for appointment). An acronym is a specific type of abbreviation formed from the first letters of a phrase and pronounced as a new word (e.g., "NASA," "LASER"). All acronyms are abbreviations, but not all abbreviations are acronyms.

Key Differences and Details:

Abbreviation: A general term for any shortened word or phrase. They often include periods (e.g., "etc.", "vol.").
Acronym: A type of abbreviation pronounced as a word. Examples:

NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration)

ASAP (As soon as possible)

LASER (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation)

Initialism (A subtype of acronym): An abbreviation formed from initial letters but pronounced as individual letters (e.g., "FBI," "DNA," "HTML").

Key Distinction: Acronyms are spoken as words, while initialisms are spoken as letters.
