Here are some Indo-Portuguese expressions to use when you want to express surprise:

Here's a dialogue between two friends expressing surprise:

  • Helena: Uau! Você viu o tamanho daquele bolo? (Wow! Did you see the size of that cake?)
  • Ana: Sim! Isso é incrível! (Yes! That's incredible!)
  • Helena: Não acredito! Vamos comer uma fatia agora mesmo! (I can't believe it! Let's have a slice right now!)
  • Ana: Que surpresa! Esse bolo deve estar delicioso! (What a surprise! This cake must be delicious!)
  • Helena: Meu Deus! É o melhor bolo que já comi na vida! (Oh my god! It's the best cake I've ever had!)
  • Ana: Caramba! Devemos pedir a receita para tentar fazer em casa. (Wow! We should ask for the recipe and try to make it at home.)

Interesting facts[edit | edit source]

- In Brazil, it's common to express surprise with the word "uau" (wow). It's a popular expression used not only to express surprise, but also admiration and excitement.

- In Portugal, people say "nossa" or "meu Deus" (oh my god) when they're surprised or shocked. These expressions can also be used when someone is impressed or outraged.

- The Indo-Portuguese language is a creole language that emerged in the period of Portuguese colonization in India. It is spoken mainly in the Indian state of Goa and in the cities of Daman and Diu.

- Indo-Portuguese has a rich cultural history, with influences from Portuguese, Indian, and African cultures. Many Indo-Portuguese traditions, such as music and cuisine, are still practiced today.
