IcelandicGrammar0 to A1 Course → Personal Pronouns

Welcome to our lesson on Icelandic Personal Pronouns! Personal pronouns are the building blocks of any language, allowing us to communicate effectively about ourselves and others. Understanding how to use them is essential for forming sentences and expressing thoughts clearly in Icelandic.

In this lesson, we will cover:

  • What personal pronouns are and their importance.
  • Subject pronouns, object pronouns, and possessive pronouns.
  • A variety of examples to illustrate their usage.
  • Exercises to practice what you’ve learned.

By the end of this lesson, you will have a solid grasp of Icelandic personal pronouns and how to use them in conversation. Let’s dive right in!

What are Personal Pronouns?[edit | edit source]

Personal pronouns are words that replace nouns in a sentence. In Icelandic, just like in English, they help us avoid repetition and make our speech more fluid. For instance, instead of saying "Jón loves Jón's dog," we can say "Jón loves him."

The three main types of personal pronouns we will explore are:

  • Subject Pronouns: Used as the subject of a sentence.
  • Object Pronouns: Used as the object of a verb or preposition.
  • Possessive Pronouns: Indicate ownership.

Subject Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Subject pronouns are used when the pronoun is the subject of the sentence. In Icelandic, the subject pronouns are:

Icelandic Pronunciation English
ég [jɛːɣ] I
þú [θuː] you (singular)
hann [han] he
hún [huːn] she
það [θaːð] it
við [vɪð] we
þið [θɪð] you (plural)
þeir [ðeːr] they (masculine)
þær [ðai̯r] they (feminine)
þau [θøː] they (neuter)

Example Sentences with Subject Pronouns:

1. Ég elska Ísland. (I love Iceland.)

2. Hún er kennari. (She is a teacher.)

3. Þeir fara í ferðalag. (They are going on a trip.)

Object Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Object pronouns are used when the pronoun is the object of a verb or preposition. In Icelandic, the object pronouns are:

Icelandic Pronunciation English
mig [mɪɣ] me
þig [θɪɣ] you (singular)
hann [han] him
hana [haːna] her
það [θaːð] it
okkur [ˈɔkʏr] us
ykkur [ˈɪkʏr] you (plural)
þá [θau] them (masculine)
þær [ðai̯r] them (feminine)
þau [θøː] them (neuter)

Example Sentences with Object Pronouns:

1. Hún sér mig. (She sees me.)

2. Ég hringi í þig. (I will call you.)

3. Við hittum hana í bænum. (We met her in the town.)

Possessive Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Possessive pronouns indicate ownership. They show that something belongs to someone. In Icelandic, the possessive pronouns are:

Icelandic Pronunciation English
minn [mɪn] my (masculine)
mín [miːn] my (feminine)
mitt [mɪt] my (neuter)
þinn [θɪn] your (singular, masculine)
þín [θiːn] your (singular, feminine)
þitt [θɪt] your (singular, neuter)
hans [hans] his
hennar [hɛnːar] her
okkar [ˈɔkʏr] our
ykkar [ˈɪkʏr] your (plural)
þeirra [ˈθeirra] their

Example Sentences with Possessive Pronouns:

1. Þetta er mín bók. (This is my book.)

2. Þetta er þinn penni. (This is your pen.)

3. Þetta er þeirra hús. (This is their house.)

Summary of Personal Pronouns[edit | edit source]

To wrap up our exploration of personal pronouns, let’s summarize:

  • Subject Pronouns are used as the subject of a sentence.
  • Object Pronouns are used as the object of a verb or preposition.
  • Possessive Pronouns show ownership.
