Let's see these phrases in context:

Useful Adjectives[edit | edit source]

When giving your opinion, you will need to know some adjectives. Here are some of the most common ones:

Georgian Pronunciation English
แƒ“แƒแƒกแƒแƒ‘แƒแƒ›แƒ˜ da-sa-ba-mi appropriate, fitting
แƒ“แƒแƒฃแƒจแƒ•แƒ”แƒ‘แƒ”แƒšแƒ˜ da-u-shve-be-li unacceptable, inappropriate

แƒชแƒฃแƒ“แƒ˜ tsu-di bad
แƒ™แƒแƒ แƒ’แƒ˜ kar-ghi good

Here's an example dialogue where these adjectives are used:

  • Person 1: แƒ”แƒก แƒ™แƒ แƒ˜แƒขแƒ˜แƒ™แƒ แƒ›แƒกแƒฎแƒ•แƒ”แƒ แƒžแƒšแƒฃแƒš แƒ˜แƒงแƒ. (Es kri-ti-ka ms-khve-rp-lul iq-o) (This critique was delicious.)
  • Person 2: แƒ•แƒ”แƒ  แƒ•แƒฌแƒงแƒ•แƒ˜แƒขแƒ”แƒ‘ แƒ“แƒแƒฃแƒจแƒ•แƒ”แƒ‘แƒ”แƒšแƒ˜แƒ. (Ver vts-qvit-eb da-u-shve-be-lia) (I can't disagree more.)

As you can see, Person 1 used the adjective "แƒ›แƒกแƒฎแƒ•แƒ”แƒ แƒžแƒšแƒฃแƒšแƒ˜" (mskhverp'luli) meaning "delicious", and Person 2 used the phrase "แƒ•แƒ”แƒ  แƒ•แƒฌแƒงแƒ•แƒ˜แƒขแƒ”แƒ‘ แƒ“แƒแƒฃแƒจแƒ•แƒ”แƒ‘แƒ”แƒšแƒ˜แƒ" (Ver vts-qvit-eb da-u-shve-be-lia) meaning "I can't disagree more".

Cultural Information[edit | edit source]

In Georgia, it is common to express your opinion in a polite and indirect way. The use of euphemisms or expressions that soften criticism is highly appreciated. For example, instead of saying "this is bad", you could say "this has room for improvement".

When expressing your opinion to elders, it is especially important to be indirect and respectful. You could use phrases such as "แƒ—แƒฅแƒ•แƒ”แƒœแƒ˜ แƒซแƒ•แƒ”แƒšแƒ˜ แƒ’แƒแƒฎแƒ“แƒ”แƒ‘แƒ แƒ›แƒแƒ’แƒแƒ แƒ˜", which means "your old ways are good".
