In this lesson, we will explore the Present Simple tense in Central Pashto. Understanding the present simple is crucial as it allows you to express actions that are currently happening or general truths. Whether you want to describe your daily routine, talk about your likes, or share facts, the present simple tense is essential.

This lesson is structured in a way to gradually build your understanding. We will begin with an introduction to the present simple tense, followed by detailed explanations, examples, and exercises to practice what you learn. By the end of this lesson, you will be equipped to use the present simple tense confidently in your conversations.

What is the Present Simple Tense?[edit | edit source]

The present simple tense is used to indicate actions that are habitual or factual. In Central Pashto, like in English, it enables us to communicate things that happen regularly or truths that are always true.

For example:

  • I eat breakfast. (This indicates a regular activity.)
  • The sun rises in the east. (This is a general truth.)

Forming the Present Simple Tense[edit | edit source]

To form the present simple tense in Central Pashto, you typically follow a straightforward structure:

1. For affirmative sentences: Subject + Verb (in present form)

2. For negative sentences: Subject + نۀ (na) + Verb (in present form)

3. For questions: Verb (in present form) + Subject

Affirmative Sentences[edit | edit source]

In Central Pashto, the verb changes slightly based on the subject. Here is how to conjugate some common verbs in the present simple:

Central Pashto Pronunciation English
زه خورم za khoram I eat
ته خوري ta khori You eat (singular)
هغه خوري haga khori He/She eats
موږ خورئ munga khore We eat
تاسو خورئ tasoo khore You eat (plural/formal)
هغوی خوري haghwee khori They eat

Negative Sentences[edit | edit source]

To make a negative sentence, simply add نۀ (na) before the verb:

Central Pashto Pronunciation English
زه نۀ خورم za na khoram I do not eat
ته نۀ خوري ta na khori You do not eat (singular)
هغه نۀ خوري haga na khori He/She does not eat
موږ نۀ خورئ munga na khore We do not eat
تاسو نۀ خورئ tasoo na khore You do not eat (plural/formal)
هغوی نۀ خوري haghwee na khori They do not eat

Questions[edit | edit source]

To form questions in the present simple tense, invert the subject and verb:

Central Pashto Pronunciation English
آیا زه خورم؟ aya za khoram? Do I eat?
آیا ته خوري؟ aya ta khori? Do you eat? (singular)
آیا هغه خوري؟ aya haga khori? Does he/she eat?
آیا موږ خورئ؟ aya munga khore? Do we eat?
آیا تاسو خورئ؟ aya tasoo khore? Do you eat? (plural/formal)
آیا هغوی خوري؟ aya haghwee khori? Do they eat?
