Cultural Context[edit | edit source]

Central Atlas Tamazight, also known as Shilha or Tashelhit, is one of the most widely spoken varieties of Berber languages in Morocco. It is the language of the Berber people who are the indigenous ethnic group of North Africa. Berber languages have been spoken for at least 4,000 years and prior to Arabization, Berber was spoken in a wider area of North Africa than today. Central Atlas Tamazight is used in everyday conversations, and like other Berber languages, it has several dialects across Morocco. The language has had a significant impact on Moroccan culture, especially in the form of music, poetry, and art.
