AmharicGrammar0 to A1 Course → Basic Prepositions and Adverbs

In this lesson, we will explore the fascinating world of basic prepositions and adverbs in the Amharic language. Understanding these elements is crucial for forming more complex sentences, which will greatly enhance your conversational skills in Amharic. Mastering prepositions and adverbs will allow you to describe locations, express time, and add detail to your sentences, making your communication more effective and engaging.

We will start by defining prepositions and adverbs, followed by their usage in sentences. To illustrate these concepts, we'll provide plenty of examples to help you grasp how these words function in everyday conversation. Finally, we’ll have some exercises to solidify your understanding and application of prepositions and adverbs in Amharic.

What are Prepositions?[edit | edit source]

Prepositions are words that link nouns, pronouns, or phrases to other words within a sentence. They often indicate relationships of time, place, direction, and manner.

For example, in English, we might say:

  • The book is on the table.
  • She went to the market.

In Amharic, prepositions serve a similar function. Here are some common Amharic prepositions:

Amharic Pronunciation English
እንደ (ʾǝndä) enda like/as
በ (bä) in/on/at
ወደ (wädä) wädä to/towards
ከ (kä) from
በኩል (bäkul) bäkul beside
ላይ (lay) lay on
ታች (tač) tač under
ውስጥ (wɨst) wǝst inside
ውስጥ (wɨst) wǝst inside
ከላይ (kälay) kälay above

What are Adverbs?[edit | edit source]

Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, providing more information about how, when, where, or to what extent something occurs. They can describe manner, time, place, frequency, degree, and more.

For example, in English:

  • She runs quickly.
  • He will arrive tomorrow.

In Amharic, adverbs function similarly. Here are some examples of common Amharic adverbs:

Amharic Pronunciation English
በጣም (bäṭam) betam very
እንደዚያ (ʾǝndäziya) endäziya like this
አሁን (ahūn) ahun now
ወቅታዊ (wäqṭawi) wäqṭawi currently
ወዲያው (wädiya) wädiyaw there
በላይ (bälay) bälay above
በአሁን (bäʾahun) bäʾahun at present
በወቅታዊ (bäwäqṭawi) bäwäqṭawi temporarily
በዚህ (bäziħ) bäziħ here
በየዕድ (bäyäʾəd) bäyäʾəd daily
