Cultural Information[edit | edit source]

Afar is a language widely spoken in Djibouti, Eritrea and Ethiopia. The Afar people are traditionally pastoralists who move with their herds seeking for water and pastures. Initiation ceremonies and other rituals are an essential part of their culture. For instance, they have the Gudda whose purpose is to honour warriors, a community of men that have shown an exceptional bravery during battles. Besides, Afar women are known for their art of making baskets and textiles such as shawls, aprons and waistcloths.
