Spanish Past Tense Grammar Lesson: Simple Past (Preterite) and Imperfect

The past tense in Spanish allows us to talk about actions, events, or conditions that occurred in the past. There are two main past tenses in Spanish: Preterite (Pretérito) and Imperfect (Imperfecto). Each has specific uses and forms, which we will break down step-by-step.

1. The Preterite Tense (Pretérito)

The Preterite is used to describe actions or events that are completed in the past. These are often specific actions with a clear beginning or end.

1.1 Conjugation of Regular Verbs

Here’s how regular verbs are conjugated in the Preterite:

For -AR verbs:

  • Yo hablé (I spoke)
  • Tú hablaste (You spoke)
  • Él/ella habló (He/she spoke)
  • Nosotros hablamos (We spoke)
  • Ellos/ellas hablaron (They spoke)

For -ER verbs:

  • Yo comí (I ate)
  • Tú comiste (You ate)
  • Él/ella comió (He/she ate)
  • Nosotros comimos (We ate)
  • Ellos/ellas comieron (They ate)

For -IR verbs:

  • Yo viví (I lived)
  • Tú viviste (You lived)
  • Él/ella vivió (He/she lived)
  • Nosotros vivimos (We lived)
  • Ellos/ellas vivieron (They lived)

2. The Imperfect Tense (Imperfecto)

The Imperfect is used to describe ongoing or repeated actions in the past, or to set the scene in a story.

2.1 Conjugation of Regular Verbs

For -AR verbs:

  • Yo hablaba (I used to speak)
  • Tú hablabas (You used to speak)
  • Él/ella hablaba (He/she used to speak)
  • Nosotros hablábamos (We used to speak)
  • Ellos/ellas hablaban (They used to speak)

For -ER verbs:

  • Yo comía (I used to eat)
  • Tú comías (You used to eat)
  • Él/ella comía (He/she used to eat)
  • Nosotros comíamos (We used to eat)
  • Ellos/ellas comían (They used to eat)

For -IR verbs:

  • Yo vivía (I used to live)
  • Tú vivías (You used to live)
  • Él/ella vivía (He/she used to live)
  • Nosotros vivíamos (We used to live)
  • Ellos/ellas vivían (They used to live)

When to use Preterite vs. Imperfect

Choosing the correct tense depends on the context.

Use the preterite when:

  1. The action is completed. Example: Ayer terminé mi tarea. (Yesterday, I finished my homework.)
  2. The action happened at a specific time. Example: Ellos llegaron a las 8 de la noche. (They arrived at 8 p.m.)
  3. To describe a sequence of events in the past. Example: Me desperté, me vestí, y fui a trabajar. (I woke up, got dressed, and went to work.)

Use the Imperfect when:

  1. Describing ongoing or repeated actions in the past. Example: Siempre jugábamos en el parque. (We always played in the park.)
  2. Setting the scene in the past. Example: Hacía sol y la gente paseaba por la calle. (It was sunny, and people were walking down the street.)
  3. Talking about feelings, conditions, or states. Example: Yo estaba cansado. (I was tired.) Example: La casa era grande y bonita. (The house was big and beautiful.)

Irregular verbs

Some verbs do not follow regular conjugation rules.

For example, "ir" (to go) and "ser" (to be) are identical in the Preterite:

  • Yo fui (I went/I was)
  • Tú fuiste (You went/You were)

The verb "ver" (to see) in the Imperfect is regular but slightly different:

  • Yo veía (I used to see)
  • Nosotros veíamos (We used to see)

Practice sentences

  1. Preterite:
    • ¿Qué hiciste ayer? (What did you do yesterday?)
    • Compré un libro en la tienda. (I bought a book at the store.)
  2. Imperfect:
    • Cuando era niño, siempre visitábamos a mis abuelos. (When I was a child, we always visited my grandparents.)
    • Leía un libro cuando sonó el teléfono. (I was reading a book when the phone rang.)
