Sudanese Arabic Grammar - Questions

Hi Sudanese Arabic learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will be learning how to form and use questions in Sudanese Arabic. Questions play a vital role in communication, and mastering the art of asking questions will help you improve your conversational skills. Let's get started!

Basic question formation

In Sudanese Arabic, there are two ways of forming questions:

1. By using a question word at the beginning of the sentence. For example:

Sudanese Arabic Pronunciation English
اش اسمك ʾashu ʾismak What is your name?
فين الحمام fīn al-ḥamām Where is the bathroom?

2. By changing the tone of the sentence to indicate that it is a question. For example:

Sudanese Arabic Pronunciation English
بتتكلم العربي btitkallam al-ʿarabi Are you speaking Arabic?
كانكم في السينما kānkum fī s-sīnemā Were you at the cinema?

In both cases, the question particle هل (hal) can be added for clarity, but it is not necessary.

Question words

In Sudanese Arabic, the most common question words are:

Sudanese Arabic Pronunciation English
اش ʾash What
فين fīn Where
ليه lih Why
متى mattā When
كيف kayf How

These question words can be used at the beginning of a sentence to ask a question, as shown in the examples above.

Question tags

Question tags are short phrases added at the end of a sentence to turn it into a question. In Sudanese Arabic, the most common question tags are:

Sudanese Arabic Pronunciation English
ايي ayi right?
مضبوط madbūṭ correct?
صح ṣaḥ true?

For example:

Sudanese Arabic Pronunciation English
كدا عاملها مضبوط، صح؟ kida ʿāmaleha madbūṭ, ṣaḥ? You did it right, didn't you?

Examples in context

Here's a dialogue to illustrate how to use questions in Sudanese Arabic:

  • Person 1: اش اسمك؟ (ʾashu ʾismak?) (What is your name?)
  • Person 2: اسمي احمد، وانت؟ (ismi aḥmad, wint?) (My name is Ahmed, and you?)
  • Person 1: فين تشتغل؟ (fīn tishtaghil?) (Where do you work?)
  • Person 2: بشتغل في مركز تجاري. (bish tughlī fī markaz tijārī.) (I work at a shopping center.)
