Kirghiz Grammar - Adjectives

Hi Kirghiz learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing adjectives in the Kirghiz language. Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns and pronouns. They can be used to give more information about a person, place, thing, or idea.

Formation of Adjectives

Adjectives in Kirghiz are formed by adding suffixes to nouns. The suffixes depend on the gender and number of the noun.

Masculine Singular

For masculine singular nouns, the suffix -ды is added. For example:

  • бала (boy) → балады (boyish)
  • ат (horse) → атды (horsy)

Feminine Singular

For feminine singular nouns, the suffix -га is added. For example:

  • киз (girl) → кизга (girlish)
  • жан (woman) → жанга (womanly)

Plural

For plural nouns, the suffix -лар is added. For example:

  • балалар (boys) → балаларды (boyish)
  • атлар (horses) → атларды (horsy)

Adjective Agreement

Adjectives must agree with the nouns they modify in gender and number. For example:

  • балады бала (boyish boy)
  • балаларды балалар (boyish boys)
  • кизга киз (girlish girl)
  • кизларга кизлар (girlish girls)

Adjective Position

Adjectives usually come after the noun they modify. For example:

  • балады бала (boyish boy)
  • кизга киз (girlish girl)

However, they can also come before the noun. For example:

  • балады балалар (boyish boys)
  • кизга кизлар (girlish girls)
