Language/Russian/Grammar/Gender
Hi Russian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the gender of nouns in Russian. We will look at the rules for determining the gender of a noun and practice with examples. Let's get started!
Rules
In Russian, nouns are either masculine, feminine, or neuter. The gender of a noun is usually determined by its ending. Here are some general rules:
- Masculine nouns usually end in a consonant, such as -й, -р, -л, -т, -н.
- Feminine nouns usually end in -а, -я, -ь, -га, -ка.
- Neuter nouns usually end in -о, -е, -мя, -ие.
However, there are exceptions to these rules. For example, some nouns that end in -а can be masculine, and some nouns that end in -о can be feminine.
