Gulf Arabic Grammar - Gender

Hi Gulf Arabic learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the gender rules in Gulf Arabic. Understanding the gender rules is essential for mastering the language. Let's get started!

Gender Rules

Gulf Arabic has two genders: masculine and feminine. The gender of a noun affects the form of the adjective that describes it, as well as the verb conjugation.

Masculine Nouns

Masculine nouns are usually indicated by the definite article al (ال). For example:

Gulf Arabic Pronunciation English Translation
الطالب al-ṭālib the student
الكتاب al-kitāb the book
المدرس al-mudarris the teacher

Feminine Nouns

Feminine nouns are usually indicated by the definite article al (ال) followed by at (الت). For example:

Gulf Arabic Pronunciation English Translation
الطالبة al-ṭāliba the student (female)
الكتابة al-kitāba the book (female)
المدرسة al-mudarrisa the teacher (female)

Adjectives

The gender of an adjective must match the gender of the noun it describes. For example:

Gulf Arabic Pronunciation English Translation
الطالب الجيد al-ṭālib al-jayyid the good student
الكتاب الجيد al-kitāb al-jayyid the good book
المدرسة الجيدة al-mudarrisa al-jayyida the good teacher

Verbs

The gender of a verb must match the gender of the subject. For example:

Gulf Arabic Pronunciation English Translation
يقرأ الطالب yaqra' al-ṭālib the student reads
تقرأ الطالبة taqra' al-ṭāliba the student (female) reads
يكتب المدرس yaktub al-mudarris the teacher writes
