Language/Odia/Grammar/Adjectives
Hi Odia learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing adjectives in the Odia language. Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns and pronouns. They can be used to give more information about a person, place, thing, or idea. In Odia, adjectives are usually placed before the noun they modify.
Types of Adjectives
Adjectives can be divided into two main categories: descriptive adjectives and possessive adjectives.
Descriptive Adjectives
Descriptive adjectives are used to describe the qualities of a noun or pronoun. Examples of descriptive adjectives include: big, small, tall, short, happy, sad, etc.
Possessive Adjectives
Possessive adjectives are used to show ownership or possession. Examples of possessive adjectives include: my, your, his, her, its, our, their, etc.
Adjective Endings
In Odia, adjectives have different endings depending on the gender and number of the noun they modify.
Masculine Singular
When modifying a masculine singular noun, the adjective ending is usually -a. For example:
- bāra (big) + ghara (house) = bāra ghara (big house)
Feminine Singular
When modifying a feminine singular noun, the adjective ending is usually -ī. For example:
- bāra (big) + kānana (forest) = bārī kānana (big forest)
Neuter Singular
When modifying a neuter singular noun, the adjective ending is usually -u. For example:
- bāra (big) + pālaka (toy) = bāru pālaka (big toy)
Masculine Plural
When modifying a masculine plural noun, the adjective ending is usually -ā. For example:
- bāra (big) + gharā (houses) = bārā gharā (big houses)
Feminine Plural
When modifying a feminine plural noun, the adjective ending is usually -ī. For example:
- bāra (big) + kānanī (forests) = bārī kānanī (big forests)
Neuter Plural
When modifying a neuter plural noun, the adjective ending is usually -u. For example:
- bāra (big) + pālaku (toys) = bāru pālaku (big toys)
Adjective Agreement
In Odia, adjectives must agree with the nouns they modify in gender and number. This means that the adjective must have the same gender and number as the noun it modifies. For example:
- bāra ghara (big house)
- bārī kānana (big forest)
- bāru pālaka (big toy)
- bārā gharā (big houses)
- bārī kānanī (big forests)
- bāru pālaku (big toys)
