Bengali Grammar - Negation

Hi Bengali learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about negation in the Bengali language. Negation is an important part of any language, and it is essential to understand how to use it correctly. We will look at the different ways to express negation in Bengali, as well as some examples of how to use them.

Negation is a way of expressing the opposite of something. In Bengali, there are several ways to express negation. The most common way is to use the particle না (na). This particle is used to negate verbs, adjectives, and nouns. For example:

  • আমি খেলছি না - I am not playing
  • এটা ভাল না - That is not good
  • তারা আমার বন্ধু না - They are not my friends

Another way to express negation in Bengali is to use the particle নি (ni). This particle is used to negate adverbs and adverbial phrases. For example:

  • তারা দ্রুত গিয়েছে নি - They have not gone quickly
  • আমি সহজে শিখতে পারি নি - I cannot learn easily
  • তারা আমাকে সহজে বুঝতে পারে নি - They cannot understand me easily

Finally, the particle নেই (nei) can be used to negate nouns and noun phrases. For example:

  • আমার বন্ধু নেই - I have no friends
  • আমি এখানে কিছু খেলতে পারি নেই - I cannot play anything here
  • আমি এখানে কিছু খুঁজতে পারি নেই - I cannot find anything here

It is important to remember that the particles না, নি, and নেই can all be used to express negation in Bengali. However, they must be used in the correct context in order for the sentence to make sense.
