Plural in Georgian

How to form plural in Georgian

Plural forms are produced by the suffix “-ებ.” Note that the final “ა” is reduced by adding this suffix. Compare: კაცი – კაცები, ქალაქი – ქალაქები, წიგნი – წიგნები, ქალი – ქალები and ჩანთა – ჩანთები, მაგიდა – მაგიდები.

Words loosing their vocals in their plural

Words ending on “-ნ-”, “-რ-”, “-ლ-”, and “-მ-” that have the following vowels in front of them – “ო-”, “ა-”, and “ე-” – loose these vocals in their plural. In other words, in plural forms the last vowels are missing in words ending on: -ან-, -ენ-, -ონ-, -ამ-, -ემ-, -ომ-, -არ-, -ერ-, -ორ-, -ალ-, -ელ-, -ოლ-. Compare: ქალი – ქალები, ბავშვი – ბავშვები and მეგობარი – მეგობრები, სოფელი – სოფლები.

No plural form with numerals in Georgian

Georgian doesn’t use a plural form with numerals unlike English. Compare “six books” and “five notebooks” with “ექვსი წიგნი” (not “ექვსი წიგნები”) and “ხუთი რვეული” (not “ხუთი რვეულები”).
