Apart from Standard Mandarin, there are eight dialect groups.

  • Northeastern Mandarin 东北官话/東北官話
  • Ji–Lu Mandarin 冀鲁官话/冀魯官話
  • Beijing Mandarin 北京官话/北京官話
  • Central Plains Mandarin 中原官话/中原官話
  • Jiao–Liao Mandarin 胶辽官话/膠遼官話
  • Southwestern Mandarin (Upper Yangtze Mandarin) 西南官话/西南官話 (上江官话/上江官話)
  • Jiang–Huai Mandarin (Lower Yangtze Mandarin) 江淮官话/江淮官話 (下江官话/下江官話)
  • Lan–Yin Mandarin 兰银官话/蘭銀官話

Standard Mandarin is based on Beijing Mandarin.

There is a word 蓝青官话/藍青官話. Its literal meaning is "Neither-Blue-Nor-Indigo Mandarin", indicating it's a mixture of different dialects of Mandarin.
