Hi Odia learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will focus on one of the important parts of speech in Odia, Adjectives. A good understanding of Adjectives will help you to form proper sentences and communicate effectively in speech and writing.
Introduction
Adjectives are words that modify and provide additional meaning to nouns or pronouns. They describe the qualities, characteristics or attributes of a person, place, thing or idea. In simple words, Adjectives are used to add color and detail to a sentence and provide a more vivid and clear description of the noun they refer to. In Odia, Adjectives can be used before or after a noun or pronoun depending upon the context of the sentence.
Formation of Adjectives
In the Odia language, Adjectives usually end in "-a" or "-i". They can be formed by adding these suffixes to nouns or pronouns that describe the quality or attribute in question.
Examples:
| Odia | Pronunciation | English |
|---|---|---|
| ନୀଳ | nīḷa | blue |
| ଲାଲ | lāla | red |
| ସୁନ୍ଦର | sundara | beautiful |
Comparison of Adjectives
In Odia, Adjectives can also be compared using different forms. There are three types of comparisons- positive, comparative, and superlative.
- Positive degree - Used to describe the basic or original quality of the noun or pronoun.
Example: ମୋ ପିତା ବଡ଼ା ମାନୁଷ। (mō pitā baṛā mānuṣa.) - My father is a big man.
- Comparative degree - Used to compare two things or people and describe which one is superior.
Example: ମୋ ପିତା ସେମାନେଇ ବଡ଼ା ମାନୁଷ। (mō pitā semānēi baṛā mānuṣa.) - My father is bigger than him.
- Superlative degree - Used to describe the highest degree of a quality or attribute.
Example: ମୋ ପିତା ସର୍ବାଧିକ ବଡ଼ା ମାନୁଷ। (mō pitā sarbādhika baṛā mānuṣa.) - My father is the biggest man.
Usage of Adjectives
In Odia, Adjectives are used in various ways to ascribe attributes to a noun or pronoun.
Before a noun
Adjectives that come before a noun are used to describe the noun's quality, color, size, etc. Example: ମୋ ନାନ ଛୋଟ ଘର। (mō nāna chhōṭa ghar) - My grandfather's house is a small house.
After a noun
Adjectives that come after a noun are used to describe a particular quality of the noun. Example: ସେ ଚାଲାକ ଛାତ୍ର। (sē chālāka chhātra) - He is a clever student.
Verb agreement
In Odia language, the verb agrees with the subject and the adjective that modifies the subject in gender and number. Example:
- ସେ ସୁନ୍ଦର ଲଡ଼କା ରେଷା ଭେଗନୀ। (sē sundara laḍakā rēṣā bhēganī) - She is a beautiful girl who likes eggplant.
- ତାଙ୍କ ଛାତ୍ର ବଡ଼ା ମାନୁଷ। (tāṅka chhātra baṛā mānuṣa) - His students are big men.
Dialogue
To better understand the usage of adjectives, let's consider this dialogue below.
- Person 1: ବାଘକୁ ଦରିଦ୍ର ହୋଇଛି। (Bāghaku daridra hoichi.) - The tiger is poor.
- Person 2: ନିଳିଅ ବାଘଟି ସୁନ୍ଦର ଦେଖାଯାଛନ୍ତି। (Niḷi'a bāghaṭi sundara dēkhāyāchanti.) - The blue-eyed tiger looks beautiful.
Conclusion
Adjectives play a crucial role in the Odia language as they help to provide detailed and vivid descriptions of nouns and pronouns. The ability to use adjectives correctly can turn an ordinary sentence into an extraordinary one. Keep practicing and using them in your communication.
