In this lesson, we will learn about the gender rules in Halh Mongolian. We will look at the different genders, how to identify them and how to use them correctly.
Gender is an important part of Halh Mongolian grammar. It is used to indicate the gender of nouns and pronouns. There are three genders in Halh Mongolian: masculine, feminine and neuter.
Rules
The gender of a noun or pronoun is usually determined by its ending. Here are the general rules for determining the gender of a word:
- Masculine nouns and pronouns usually end in -a or -u.
- Feminine nouns and pronouns usually end in -i or -e.
- Neuter nouns and pronouns usually end in -o or -ö.
However, there are some exceptions to these rules. For example, some nouns and pronouns that end in -a or -u can be either masculine or neuter.
