Culture - Zulu Wrestling

Zulu wrestling (Zulu Impi, or Zulu cane) is an ancient South African combat sport practiced with sticks. The sport is no longer as common as it was during the heyday of the Zulu Empire, and its followers struggle to validate its existence in these days of political turmoil, acculturation and modernization.

Nevertheless, the Zulu Impi seems to help sustain the traditional social system by perpetuating socially accepted modes of masculine behaviors and ideals. The cultural tradition of the Zulu Impi therefore continues to fulfill its traditional didactic function in certain Zulu communities.
